Woman reveals 'panic' after brother fatally bashed over unpaid rent

The family of a Melbourne man bashed to death over $200 of unpaid rent have told his killer they will never forgive him.

Ramis Jonuzi, 36, screamed for mercy as he was being attacked in Brighton.

Craig Levy held down Mr Jonuzi while his housemates bashed him.

Levy then jumped up and slammed his elbow into him like a wrestler before placing the 36-year-old in a headlock.

Mr Jonuzi screamed and cried for them to stop.

Levy called police but Mr Jonuzi was already dead.

The victim’s sister, Naime Bella, told the court she cannot forgive Levy for what he did.

“When my husband touches my neck I panic thinking about my brother being strangled,” Ms Bella said.

“I don’t want revenge against you because that would make me as bad as you, but you will never be forgiven.”

Justice Andrew Tinney told Levy’s lawyer Mr Jonuzi was “helpless” and “obviously outnumbered”.

“It was a pretty extreme way to extract rent,” he said.

Levy was originally charged with murder but that was downgraded to manslaughter as part of a plea deal. He pleaded guilty.

He has also agreed to turn prosecution witness against his former housemate.

For his co-operation with authorities, Levy will have his jail time reduced.

He will be sentenced next week.
