A woman has been threatened with a knife and punched numerous times during a Sydney home invasion that happened while she was with her baby son.

Police say the 23-year-old and her 16-month-old son were in a Homebush West unit on Thursday when a man wearing a black scarf over his face demanded money and pushed her against a wall around 10.30am.

They say the Caucasian man, who was wearing a black jumper and jeans, ransacked a bedroom searching for money before leaving empty-handed.
