Woman perplexed by unusual feature in her rental property

A confused renter took to social media for an explanation of what seemed to be an out-of-place feature inside a rental she just moved into.

The woman shared a photo to Facebook on Friday showcasing the bricked corner in her Brisbane property and was soon inundated with suggestions of what its purpose could be.

“What is this and what do I do with it?” she asked, sharing a photo of the curvature of bricks and tiny shelf metres above it.

Nearly 800 people weighed in with their own ideas on what it was, with suggestions ranging from it being a wishing well to a naughty corner built into the home.

Others thought the renter should use the small section for toy storage, an indoor fountain shower, a designated wine-sipping spot or a time-out for her partner.

Many suggested the woman should fill the space up with pot plants, or add a few extra layers of bricking and a plank of wood to make a nice seat.

There were also people encouraging the woman to put some more shelves in the corner and fill them all with plants, use the space for a litter tray or for a fish tank.

Some joked the brickwork probably wanted to be a fireplace when it grew up, or that its purpose was to protect the Christmas tree during the festive period.

Another said the woman should use the space to store and esky while entertaining, to provide quick and easy access to cold beverages.

Despite several plausible options, the true purpose of the space was revealed to be a sacred religious space, where either a photo of Jesus or Mary was placed on the shelf, with plants in the area below.

“Back in the day they would put plants and flowers around the bottom, and a statue of whoever they pray to above, as well as a picture on the wall,” someone wrote.

The woman said she had enjoyed reading through all the comments.

“These comments are actually the best things I have ever read,” she wrote in an update to the post.
