Woman outraged by description on receipt
A solo diner's evening turned sour when she found out bar staff had added a "disrespectful" description of her to a receipt.
The woman had been treating herself to a few cocktails at a bar in Washington DC, in the US, on April 16 when suddenly things took a turn for the worse.
On being handed her receipt, which showed she had racked up a US$64 (A$83) bill, a description entered by her server Shaun left her seeing red.
"Girl by herself," was printed on her receipt, which she photographed and uploaded to Twitter the following day with the caption: "This description is so disrespectful".
The tweet was quick to go viral, attracting more than 600,000 likes and thousands of replies.
Many were empathetic of her situation and argued she should have been able to go out for a solo drink without having it pointed out on her receipt.
Debate over solo diner's receipt
Many on Twitter jumped to the defence of the solo woman.
"I am that person, too! Much love to my fellow solo travellers (I think there is a positive correlation between codependency and degree of puzzlement over independent social activity...read: it’s them)," one person wrote in response.
"I feel you on this one," someone else wrote, sharing a photo of a receipt that described him a "raspy voice guy".
"He probably forgot the customer was gonna see that note. I’ve done that one a few times too," another wrote.
Others suggested the description was an accurate depiction of the woman's situation and argued she had nothing to complain about.
"Really? If you are without company, you are just that," one wrote.
"Why disrespectful? Seems a simple way to help the waiters identify guests they are serving," another said.
Several others shared hurtful ways they had been described on receipts, including one who received a receipt with "lil ugly dude" written on it.
Another woman shared an image of a coffee cup with "lady on a leash" on it, which she said servers used to identify her as the woman using an oxygen tank to breathe.
