Woman may have been stalked before body found near shopping centre
Police are hunting a killer after the suspected murder of a young woman whose body was found near a shopping centre at Bundoora in Melbourne’s north.
It’s believed she may have been followed after getting off a tram, and then attacked.
The woman’s body was found by a member of the public and the area where she was discovered has been cordoned off by police.
Forensic officers moved in, marking a number of areas of interest. Some personal belongings could be seen strewn close by.
A passerby made the shocking discovery next to bushes beside the Polaris shopping centre carpark.
Homicide detectives have been reluctant to go into detail, only saying that the woman had been “assaulted”.
A witness has told police of hearing a woman crying.
“What I can assure the community of, is that we are all working really hard to get the answers,” Victoria Police Detective Inspector Andrew Stamper said.
It’s possible the woman could have been followed from the 86 tram. Her body was discovered less than 100 metres away from the Main Drive tram stop.
Detectives are urging anyone on the city to Bundoora route between 11pm Tuesday night and 1am Wednesday morning to come forward.
Police are stepping up patrols in the area with detectives continuing to interview all residents in a wide zone around the crime scene.
The woman’s identity has not been revealed but her body has been taken from the scene for post-mortem examination.
