Woman, man critical after stabbing
A critical incident has been declared after a suspected domestic violence incident resulted in a woman suffering serious wounds to her head, before a man allegedly stabbed himself in the neck.
Emergency services were called to a home in the western Sydney suburb of Hebersham at about 8.50am on Friday following reports of an assault.
Officers from the Mount Druitt Police Area Command attempted to speak to the 29-year-old man before he allegedly suffered self-inflicted injuries.
A statement from NSW Police confirmed the man was known to the 30-year-old woman.
They were both treated at the scene by paramedics and rushed to Westmead Hospital in a critical condition. The man remains under police guard.
On Friday afternoon North West Metropolitan Region Commander Assistant Commissioner Leanne McCusker told reporters a child was also at the residence during the incident.
However, she did not specify how or if the minor was related to the man and woman.
Investigators have also yet to confirm the nature of the relationship between the injured parties.
As it stands, it’s not believed they lived together at the Hebersham home, which inquiries suggested was the man’s residential address.
Commander Assistant McCusker said initial queries were ongoing, and added there was no history of domestic violence or apprehended violence orders in place between the man and the woman.
“Upon arriving at that address, police were confronted with quite a traumatic scene with a female suffering from critical injuries, and a man who was also injured, and also was self-inflicting injuries at the time that police arrived,” Commander Assistant McCusker said.
“Police immediately were able to contain and control that situation … and immediately rendered first aid to both the man and the woman prior to ambulance attending.”
Welfare support has been offered to officers and the family members who arrived at the scene after the incident.
A neighbour who identified himself as Danny told 10 News he heard a man had “hit his partner over the head with a hammer and possibly done some injury to himself with a knife.
“It’s got me shocked why this has happened. Life’s not that hard,” he said.
Investigations are ongoing and a critical incident team from North Shore Police Area Command has been deployed to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Critical incidents are declared when an incident involving a NSW police officer result in the death or the serious injury of another person.
The results of the investigation will be monitored by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission (LECC) and subject to an independent review.
Police have appealed to anyone with knowledge of the incident to contact Crime Stoppers through their website, or on 1800 333 000.
