Woman killed by falling tree while jogging at Melbourne park
A woman has been crushed to death by a century-old tree reportedly while she was jogging at an inner Melbourne park.
Paramedics were called to Royal Parade, Parkville about 8.30am on Monday to find the woman, believed to be in her 30s, in a critical condition, Ambulance Victoria said.
She was transported to Royal Melbourne Hospital, where she later died.
No one else was injured in the incident.
Pictures from the scene show the massive tree has been completely uprooted and is lying on its side over a footpath, with its exposed roots ripped out of the ground.
The City of Melbourne is now examining other trees in the area and working out when the fallen tree was last inspected by arborists, something which is meant to happen every two years.
"Our arborists are on-site and all trees in the immediate vicinity will be re-assessed for safety as a matter of priority," city chief executive Justin Hanney said in a statement.
"The fallen tree is an English elm that was planted in 1913. It is one of 3000 elms and one of 77,000 trees on our tree register."
A caller to 3AW radio Monday morning said the woman was jogging in the park at the time the tree fell.
The investigation into the incident remains ongoing and a report will be prepared for the coroner.
Part of Royal Parade has been closed to traffic while emergency services remain on the scene.
Police are asking motorists and cyclists to avoid the area.
The tragedy followed a weekend of wild weather across Victoria, with strong winds and rain sweeping Melbourne.
On Friday morning another woman was killed after a tree fell on her family's car while driving at the Yarra Ranges.
