Woman 'horrified' by discovery inside Coles roast chicken during dinner

A Perth mother had a serious fright halfway through dinner on Tuesday night, when she looked inside a roast chicken she had bought from Coles and noticed something wasn’t quite right.

Lisa Wood took the chicken home for dinner but when she and her four-year-old daughter began tucking in, they were taken aback by the strange colour of the bird’s meat, which was green.

“I was horrified to find this,” she wrote in a message posted to the Coles Facebook page, saying she only noticed the discoloured meat when her daughter asked for seconds.

Ms Wood – whose Facebook page is adorned with pictures of her working out and healthy meal preparation – was left appalled by the unsightly chook.

“Straight in the bin,” she wrote.

“After years of shopping at Coles I may need to revisit.”

But despite the unusual colour, it’s nothing to worry about, according to the supermarket chain. The green colour is the result of something called Deep Pectoral Myopathy, or DPM.

In response to the Facebook post, Coles said DPM is a “green discolouration of the flesh caused by swelling from oxygen deficiency in the muscle”.

“This can occur if the bird flaps its wings too much. If the chicken has been consumed, it is not harmful.”

It’s true.

“No public health significance is associated to DPM, but it is aesthetically undesirable,” notes Oxford Academic’s Poultry Science.

Despite the lack of harm, Coles said the chicken did not meet its strict quality standards and offered a refund.
