Woman horrified by grotesque discovery inside strawberries
A shopper who sliced open a strawberry has been left scarred after it opened to reveal a cluster of tiny eggs and a maggot happily going about its day.
The woman, from Menai, south west of Sydney, shared her disgust to Facebook after making the grotesque discovery inside a strawberry she bought from Coles.
She claimed to have purchased the Delightful Strawberries punnet from the supermarket on Tuesday, just two days before she decided to cut them up for a snack.
In video shared to the social media site, a collection of tiny eggs could be seen, as well as a white maggot.
“I purchased these two days ago, thank god I cut them. I was eating them whole yesterday. Thanks Coles,” the customer wrote in her post.
Other Facebook users were equally grossed out, many commenting about how they thought the minuscule larvae made them feel sick.
Some however thought it was a promising sign the strawberry grower hadn’t sprayed their fruit with “bucketloads of pesticides”.
Another said shoppers shouldn’t expect Coles to have “x-ray vision” to inspect every item of fruit before being made available for sale.
“We don’t live in a perfect world, people need to remember that. There will always be impurities in some aspects of our living and it sure as hell wont kill you,” one wrote.
“It’s nature, have you not ever grown produce at home?,” someone else added.
In a statement to Yahoo News Australia, a Coles spokesperson said it was “investigating”.
“Food quality and safety is paramount at Coles. We have been in contact with the customer and are currently investigating the matter.”
