Woman fined for parking in her own driveway - can you see what she's done wrong?

A Perth woman who has been fined $60 for parking in her own driveway says she was not aware she was doing anything illegal and wants others to learn from her experience.

Byford woman Courtney, who did not want to give her last name, has parked her Ford Ranger in the front driveway of her home for more than a year.

Her garage is not big enough to fit two cars – with her partner parking inside.

Further Courtney cannot park her car on the grass strip between the footpath and the road, despite local council notices asking residents to do so.

“The council had told us to park on the verge (the grass strip) but we can’t do that, because we’re on a T-junction and it’s obviously illegal – and dangerous – to do that,” Courtney told Yahoo7.

Like many new suburban homes, Courtney’s house was built with a short driveway spanning about five metres from the garage door to her letterbox.

On Monday the local council slapped her with a fine because the towbar of her car sat over the edge of her driveway.

“I’d only just pulled into my driveway and walked into my house. Not long after that I was leaving again, so they basically caught me in the moment of just quickly pulling into my driveway,” she said.

Courtney shared a photo of her car’s position on the driveway to Facebook to make others aware of the rule.

“Obviously not everyone is aware that it’s a law, me included,” Courtney said.

“We did challenge the fine, but it’s not really about the money.

“It’s about making people aware that just by parking in their driveway their council may hit them up with a fine.”

“By parking vehicles blocking any portion of the footpath .. pedestrians may be forced onto the road,” a Western Australian government parking fact sheet states.

“This can be both frustrating and dangerous for pedestrians, especially people with prams, people with disabilities and young children.”

But Courtney says: “If someone is completely blocking a pathway, give them a fine, I’m all for that.

“The ridiculous thing for me is, people in this suburb park all over the place, places where they shouldn’t be parked, on the verge outside schools – and they want to pick on the people who are actually parked in their own driveways.”
