Quebec provincial police have confirmed the body that was found in a southern Quebec town near the United States border on Thursday is that of a 29-year-old woman who had been reported missing.

The woman went missing from Hemmingford last Saturday.

On Thursday, search teams with the Sûreté du Québec (SQ) found a woman's body in the area where police had been looking for her, and said it needed time to identify it. That same day, the SQ also announced that a man had been arrested in connection with the disappearance.

The SQ has now confirmed that the body that was found Thursday is that of the missing woman.

On Friday, a 31-year-old man appeared at the Valleyfield courthouse and was formally charged with committing an indignity to a human body.

A publication ban is place, preventing the victim and the accused from being named.
