Woman dies tragic death after agreeing to feed friend's cat

A woman has died after agreeing to feed her friend’s cat while she was away on a trip.

Rachael Haber, 32, drowned after she became trapped in her friend’s basement apartment on Tuesday during torrential rain, Fox 31 Denver reports.

Ms Haber had agreed to stop by and feed a cat belonging to her friend Kembra Allen.

But the area had torrential rain, which flooded many homes in the street as Ms Haber was visiting. The 32-year-old was in the basement and couldn’t escape as the water rose to the ceiling.

Ms Allen said the neighbours heard screaming and went to help but couldn’t find the door due to the high water level. The water in the basement reached more than 2.4 metres, The Denver Channel reported.

The Colorado resident was pulled from the water by police but later died in hospital. Officers had to dive underwater several times to kick in the basement door and pull Ms Haber out, USA Today reported.

Ms Haber’s mother told CBS4 her daughter, “died as she lived, helping other people”.

Tragically, Ms Allen not only lost her friend but also her home and pet cat.

“I lost Rachael and my cat and everything,” she said.

“I don’t know how to handle this.”

A GoFundMe page has been set up to pay for Ms Allen’s lost belongings.

In a statement, the city council described the storm and subsequent flooding as a “100-year event with an estimated 2.5 inches (six centimetres) of rainfall in 30 minutes”.
