Woman dies in NSW mid-north coast crash

A woman has died in a car crash shortly after passing a police officer who intended to pull her over on the NSW mid-north coast.

Police will conduct a critical incident investigation following the death of the Ford Falcon driver at Wingham, near Taree, on Monday afternoon.

A highway patrol officer did a U-turn before planning to stop the Falcon, after seeing it travelling on Bulga Road just before 1.15pm, NSW Police said.

The Falcon was found further down the road, where it had crashed with a Hiace van travelling in the opposite direction.

The male Hiace driver was taken to John Hunter Hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

Police said the critical incident investigation team will look into the circumstances of the crash, with the investigation subject to independent review.
