Woman dies after buggy plunges off 10 metre cliff

A woman has died in a fatal buggy crash in the Northern Territory.

Police from the Territory Major Crash Unit attended the scene, approximately five kilometres northwest of Daly River Community, following the crash on Wednesday evening to find the deceased 47-year-old and a man with neck and spinal injuries.

Detective Senior Sergeant Michael Ordelman said police believe the man and woman were on the buggy when it went over a steep 10 metre cliff before landing in the creek below.

“Daly River Police were notified just after 11pm last night and travelled to the scene where they confirmed a 47-year-old female had died,” Detective Senior Sergeant Ordelman said.

“A 53-year-old male has been airlifted to RDH with CareFlight.

“Water Police have assisted with recovery efforts this morning and investigations are continuing,”

The man is said to have fired a rifle in a bid to draw attention to the crash site, NT News reported.

Nearby fishermen heard the shots and contacted police.

The pair are said to have been close friends from the local area and were on a hunting trip at the time of the accident.

The death takes the 2018 road toll for the Northern Territory to 19 compared to 11 at the same time last year.
