A woman is dead and two people are seriously injured after a crash on Victoria's Mornington Peninsula.

A tow truck and car collided in Tuerong about 3pm on Saturday, causing both vehicles to run off the road and down an embankment.

The female passenger in the rear seat of the car died at the scene, while the female driver and male front-seat passenger were cut out and airlifted to The Alfred.

The pair had life-threatening injuries, but the man is now in a serious condition while the woman's condition is serious but stable in hospital.

The 39-year-old truck driver is assisting police with their enquiries.
