A woman has died in hospital following reports of a stabbing at a Melbourne home, with homicide squad detectives investigating whether the death was domestic violence-related.
Emergency services were called to a Noble Park property about 2am on Thursday and found a woman, believed to be 26 years old, with life-threatening injuries.
She was taken to hospital where she later died. She is yet to be formally identified.
A man, aged in his 30s, was also at the scene and was taken to hospital where he remains under police guard.
Police are yet to establish the circumstances, but believe the pair were known to each other.
Victoria Police Deputy Commissioner Rick Nugent said detectives are working to establish whether the suspected stabbing is linked to domestic violence.
"The homicide squad will determine all those circumstances leading up to that tragic death," he told reporters on Thursday.
"Without commenting on that, we just see far too many deaths of women, predominantly by men, that are family violence-related.
"It's just got to end. It's got to stop."
It comes as the latest Victorian crime statistics revealed incidents of family violence jumped 5.9 per cent over the 12 months to June 30.
