Woman in Critical Condition After Being Hit and Falling Off Freeway Overpass

A woman is in critical condition after a terrifying accident resulted in her falling from a Houston freeway.

On Sunday, Oct. 6, at 9 p.m. local time, an unidentified woman was having car trouble, which ultimately led to her vehicle breaking down in a southbound lane of the I-69 Eastex Freeway, according to ABC affiliate KTRK-TV. The outlet further stated that she then proceeded to turn on her hazard lights and step outside of her car to call for a tow truck.

The Houston Police Department stated, per the outlet, that while the woman was standing waiting for help she was hit by a car and the impact of the collision sent her over the wall of the freeway overpass.

The Houston Police Department did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

Per CBS affiliate KHOU, police said that the woman fell between 25 to 30 feet off of the overpass and was taken to a local hospital, where she remains in critical condition.

Once police arrived after the woman fell, the driver who hit her and ultimately caused her fall remained at the scene, per the outlet. There is currently no further information on if the driver will face any charges related to the collision.

The crash scene became even more intense when a driver hit a police cruiser at the scene that was trying to block traffic away from the first accident, per KHOU 11. The officer who was hit was taken to the hospital and listed in stable condition, and the driver who struck the officer was believed to be intoxicated at the time.

"While we were investigating that incident at about 10:12 p.m., we had another crash that occurred where one of our officers that were blocking for that investigation was struck by another female driver who we believe showed signs of intoxication," Sgt. R. Dallas told KTRK-TV.

The driver, a woman who had two young children in the car with her, is currently facing charges, the outlet said.
