Woman claims she was tricked into paying for date's meal: 'Etiquette-wise, you invite me [means] you would pay, right?'

People on TikTok are seriously fired up after one woman shared a truly jaw-dropping story about being duped into paying for a pricey lunch bill.

According to Savannah Gamblin (@savannah_gamblin), she’d been dating a guy for a few months before he asked her to come out to lunch one day and meet his guy friend for the first time.

“In my head, that means one of two things,” she explains in her TikTok. “He’s buying, right, because he invited me to lunch. Or, be prepared to pay for myself, right? Those are my options.”

“I don’t expect anybody to ever pay for me ever,” Gamblin clarified. “But etiquette-wise, you invite me [means] you would pay, right?”

All that aside, Gamblin expected the meet-up to be a fun, casual lunch. But as soon as she got there, it was clear they had started without her. In fact, both guys nearly finished their plates by the time she sat down.

Not wanting to hold them up, Gamblin ordered a drink and a side salad to make things quick and chatted with the two friends for about 15 or 20 minutes before the bill came.

That’s where things took an even more awkward turn.

“When the waitress comes over, she’s like, ‘So how are we splitting this up?'” Gamblin recalled.

But before anyone else could answer, her date informed the waitress that they were putting it all on one card. After hearing that, Gamblin naturally assumed that it meant he was paying for all three meals on his card, and considering that her order couldn’t have been more than $15 with tip, she didn’t feel too guilty about it.

But apparently, that’s not what he meant.

Once the bill arrived, her date didn’t make any moves to grab it. In fact, he just said, “Oh, Savannah’s got it,” which left her pretty speechless.

“What? What?” Gamblin said, looking back on it all. “And they were like, ‘Yeah, we’re not paying.'”

Inside, she wanted to say something, but instead, she admits that she “panicked” after feeling put on the spot. She also didn’t want to embarrass her date in front of his friend, even though, in retrospect, she feels she had every right.

So, not wanting to cause a scene, she took out her card and paid for the bill — which came to about $100 with everything the other two had ordered.

By the end of the clip, Gamblin is clearly angry and admits she feels taken advantage of by the whole situation.

“It’s not even about the money,” she explained. “It’s about the principle.”

Most TikTokers wholeheartedly agreed and instantly took to the comments section to voice their own anger.

“Now I’m mad at you for paying!” one person told her.

“Absolutely not,” another person said. “You should have got to the waitress, given her $15, and left. Period. No scene, just DONE.”

“NEVER PAY THAT!!!! GIRRRRLLL!!!!!!!” another person exclaimed.

In a follow-up comment, Gamblin admitted that she’s still mad at herself for “not going off” on the guy in the moment. But the fact is, she didn’t. And now, the moment will probably live on as one of her biggest regrets.

In the end, a lot of people felt that Gamblin was getting played by the guy she was seeing long before she even showed up to the meal.

“I think that was the whole reason he ‘invited’ you to begin with,” one person told her. “He probably told his friend I know how we can get free meal lol smh.”

Whether or not this was the case, people called the guy “classless” and “not worthy” of Gamblin’s time or attention. And while it’s unclear what exactly happened after this incident, Gamblin certainly seems to imply she ditched the guy after it all went down.
