Woman charged with alleged sexual abuse of 7-year-old girl

A woman has been charged with the alleged sexual abuse of a child in the NSW Hunter region.

The 40-year-old woman was arrested at Waratah Police Station about 10.15am on Monday after a police investigation started in October 2017 into reports a young girl had been sexually abused.

Detectives from the Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad will allege in court the woman had sexual intercourse with the child who was aged 7 years old at the time.

The alleged abuse happened at a home in the Hunter region in June 2017, NSW police said in a statement.

Detectives also charged a 53-year-old man in April 2018 and have said both the man and the woman were known to the girl. The man is currently before the courts.

The woman was charged with two counts of sexual intercourse with a child under the age of 10 years (DV) and has been refused bail.

She appeared at Newcastle Local Court on Monday and was granted conditional bail.

The accused is due to appear before Maitland Local Court on July 17.
