Woman charged after 'leaving baby alone in apartment for hours'

A mother has been charged after allegedly leaving her three-month-old baby girl in an apartment on her own for “several hours”.

Police were called to a unit in Cabramatta in Sydney’s southwest, about 11.30am Wednesday, after receiving reports a baby may have been left home alone.

When officers arrived, the infant was located in a bassinet, with no one else home at the time.

The child was taken to Westmead Hospital for treatment where a child at risk notification was made.

Later that day, police returned to the unit and arrested a 28-year-old woman at about 1pm.

She was taken to Fairfield Police Station and charged by detectives from the Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad with abandon child under the age of seven cause danger serious injury (DV).

Police alleged the woman left the baby unattended for several hours.

She was refused bail to appear at Liverpool Local Court on Thursday.

The baby girl has gone into the care of someone else.

Detectives in the Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad investigate cases of extreme neglect, serious physical abuse and sexual assault.
