Woman accused of faking cancer to collect almost $10,000

A Melbourne woman has been charged after it was alleged she pretended to have liver cancer to receive donations.

The female, 26, from Caroline Springs, was charged over the alleged fraud on Monday morning after police say she claimed to have the disease between March and April.

As a result, a large number of family, friends and associates donated more than $9000 via direct debit and cash donations.

The woman has been charged by Melton Crime Investigations Unit detectives with one count of obtaining property by deception.

She was bailed to appear at Sunshine Magistrates’ Court on March 12, 2019.

Police are urging anyone who believe they may have made donations to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
