An elderly woman has died after she was hit by a car at an intersection in Sydney's north shore.

An 86-year-old woman has died after being hit by a car, trapping her against a fence on Sydney's north shore.

Emergency services were called to the intersection at St Leonards just before midday on Tuesday, to find the woman trapped between a silver Subaru and a fence, police said.

Police have been told the driver was trying to turn when the car hit a bollard and then crashed into the fence, trapping the woman.

The driver was taken to Royal North Shore Hospital for mandatory testing and a crime scene has been set up.
