Two people have died after plunging down a waterfall when a woman tried to take a selfie from the edge of a cliff and her friend tried to catch her.

Fernando Danziger, 31, and Any Caroliny Duarte, 23, fell 42 metres to their deaths at the Chicao Waterfall in the southern Brazilian municipality of Faxinal on March 14.

The pair lived in the nearby municipality of Londrina and were on a day trip at the tourist spot with friends when the accident happened.

Emergency services were immediately called to the scene, sending a helicopter due to difficult access to the bodies.

By the time they were reached, both victims were dead.

According to the pair's friends, Ms Duarte had been standing close to the edge of the waterfall attempting to take a selfie with her mobile phone when she slipped and fell.

Mr Danziger tried to grab hold of her, but also ended up falling, and both were killed upon impact, with the rocks below in full view of other tourists, including children.

The tourist board intends to expropriate the private land on which the Chicao Waterfall and another nearby fall are located in order to make safety improvements, according to local media.
