Make-A-Wish contestant with 'sudden death disease' auditions for 'The Voice'
His screen time during The Voice blind auditions Tuesday night may have been short, but 19-year-old contestant Berritt Haynes still made a lasting impression.
Following his audition Tuesday, Haynes revealed that, last year, he was offered a Make-A-Wish to attend a live Voice taping. However, due to the fact that there was no live audience because of COVID, his wish could not be granted. Fortunately, his mother sent in a video of him singing to audition for The Voice and, instead of sitting in the audience, he ended up on the actual stage.
When Haynes was eight years old, he was diagnosed with a heart disease called "hypertrophic cardiomyopathy," often called "the sudden death disease." When he was 14 years old, he had an internal defibrillator placed.
However, during Tuesday's episode, Haynes was just grateful to be alive and well… and on Team Blake Shelton, who tweeted live during the episode, saying: "To say it’s an honor to have you on Team Blake would be the understatement of the century! Damn proud of you Berritt!"
