It's a windscreen viper! Driver's nasty surprise on freeway

A Far North Queensland family were hysterical when they discovered a snake had somehow hitched a ride during their weekend road trip.

Rebecca Mills, from Cairns, was on a trip with her husband David and the rest of the family over the weekend.

The Mills family were heading home from Granite Gorge, west of Cairns, after a camping trip.

But as they reached the Kuranda Range, a section of the Kennedy Highway, they realised they had a stowaway.

Video uploaded to Facebook shows the family’s reaction.

Ms Mills tells her husband to stop and let the snake off but he says there’s nowhere to pull over.

“He’s not going to come off,” Mr Mills says.

“I’m going to have to get him off.”

One of the kids suggests the snake could be venomous but Ms Mills points out it’s a harmless tree snake as her husband pulls over.

“What’s he doing now? He’s looking at me,” Mr Mills says.

“He’s going to get done by the wipers.”

But Mr Mills simply picks up a large stick and pries the serpent off.

Ms Mills told Yahoo7 the snake had crawled out from under the car’s bonnet.

“We didn’t know whether to scream or laugh in hysterics,” she said.

She added it was “chaos in the car” as the family dog had earlier been sick and vomited.

“He’s going to get done by the wipers,” Mr Mills, who was driving, says in the video.

The video currently has more than 86,000 views, with some recoiling in horror.

“This is why you don’t go to Cairns,” one woman wrote.

Another woman added she would have had a heart attack if confronted by the same scene.

But others found the video hilarious and were pleased with the way Mr Mills handled the situation.

“Aw, he’s enjoying the ride,” one woman wrote.

“(It’s) the fastest he’s ever moved. This is cute. Love it.”

Another woman praised Mr Mills.

“Good on you for stopping to take it off,” she wrote.
