William Tyrrell may still be alive, Coroner's hearing told

A Coroner’s hearing has been told it’s not yet possible to conclude that missing boy William Tyrrell is dead, with police still pursuing active leads.

An inquest into the three-year-old’s disappearance will begin in March.

For the foster family at the centre at one of Australia’s greatest mysteries, the last four years have been a long road.

Wearing a Spiderman costume, William vanished from his grandmother’s yard at Kendall on the NSW Mid North Coast in September 2014.

“It isn’t presently possible to conclude that he is dead,” a directions hearing was told on Wednesday.

“The investigation is ongoing, and police are following active leads.”

“It is still an active investigation but that’s all I can say at the moment,” Homicide Squad Detective Gary Jubelin said.

Among those who will be called to give evidence at the inquest will be washing machine repairman Bill Spedding.

Previously named as a person of interest in William’s disappearance, he has never been charged and has always denied any involvement.

The final list of witnesses to give evidence, and the issues to be considered by the inquest, is due in February.

A week-long hearing is then expected to take place in March.
