A woman has died after she became trapped for hours in the back of her husband’s police car on a hot day.
Detectives say Clara Paulino, 56, whose husband is a long-serving police officer in Miami, US, was retrieving something from the back of his patrol SUV outside their family home on Friday (local time) when its self-locking mechanism was triggered, the Miami Herald reported.
Her 58-year-old husband, Aristides Paulino, was asleep after working the night shift and was unable to hear her calls for help on a day temperatures exceeded 32C.
Entering the vehicle about 1pm, her body was found by her husband and son about 5pm, law enforcement sources told the Miami Herald.
Mr Paulino was unable to sound the vehicle’s horn due to the partition in between front and the back sections of the police car.
“It’s literally a cage,” one officer said, describing the rear section of the vehicle which can only be opened from the outside once closed.
Her fingerprints were detected all over the inside of the car.
“Clearly, she was panicked and trying to get out,” the source said.
While investigations are ongoing, police are understood to be treating her death as a tragic accident.
Her son, also named Aristides Paulino, told the Miami Herald the family were in “a lot of pain”.
