Why TikTok star’s video has sparked outrage

A TikTok family have been slammed for their extravagant purchases following almost $100,000 in donations raised by a GoFundMe page.

Nick Smith, his partner Jess and their four children had their home destroyed in an arson attack in southeast London in July.

Almost £50,000 (A$93,400) was donated to the family who have almost 3.3 million followers on TikTok to rebuild their home, but it appears the family were insured and didn't ask for the donations.

GoFundMe donors furious

Fans who donated to the fund have furiously hit out at the family after videos of Mr Smith riding on a jet-ski were posted online.

In a recent video, Mr Smith shared footage of himself riding on a brand-new jet-ski and defended how he is spending his money.

"To the people who are so caught up in my life, so anxious about what I'm doing or how I'm spending my own money when you're not focusing on your own life...

"We've gone through hell and back. We're still smiling, we're still pushing forward, we're still working, we're still earning money, we're still smiling and enjoying life. What you doing? What are you doing, eh?

"Negative people only get negative things in life. Don't be a negative person."

The post was hit with angry comments who criticised him for spending the money raised for their home on the jet-ski.

One angry TikTok user said: "See they're spending their GoFundMe well."

"So much for fixing the house with the £50k," another added.

Promised extra funds would be donated to charity

Responding to the comments in a video, the TikTok influencers said the funds raised for them will be going to charities and their neighbours instead.

"We are very appreciative and thankful for everyone who donated, even though we didn't ask for this" Mr Smith said.

"We are passing this on to other causes and charities," Mr Smith explained. " We've done £13,000 to a family that lost everything in a fire in Croydon.

"We gave a small amount to each neighbour next door to cover their [insurance] excess and anything that wasn't gonna be replaced.

“I am going to use some of the GoFundMe money to pay off the car finance so I can get myself a new car, on finance that I will pay for.

"The rest of it, I’m going to get my girls a few little bits, then the big chunk of it, we’re going to give back to other people that have gone through the same as us but who haven’t got insurance.”

The couple then listed other charities they donated to, including the MS Society, and asked for suggestions for other charities to donate to.
