Why Prince Andrew Is No Longer Attending King Charles' Annual Pre-Christmas Lunch
It was previously reported that the royal was hoping to go.
After a series of scandals, it seems that tensions between Prince Andrew and the rest of the royal family remain high in the run-up to Christmas. Earlier this year, Charles reportedly tried to evict Andrew from his residence, the Royal Lodge. Despite this, in late November, it was reported that Charles extended an invitation to his brother for the annual holiday celebrations at Sandringham.
Although, Andrew wasn't planning to make the trip on Christmas, it was previously reported that he was hoping to attend Charles's pre-Christmas lunch. However, after the disgraced royal's connection to an alleged Chinese spy, Charles has reportedly claimed to be "finished" with his brother, according to the Daily Beast. Now, People notes that Andrew has decided to sit out this event.
"Despite [the Duchess's] missteps in the past, she does know how things will play out socially," royal biographer Ingrid Seward said. "She would tell him it’s best to stay away."
Seward believes that their two daughters, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, would have agreed with their mother. "And Beatrice would have backed her up in that," Seward added.
This news comes after reports that Kate Middleton decided against inviting Andrew to her annual Christmas carol service. "William and Kate aren't sharing the love," Ephraim Hardcastle wrote in his Daily Mail column. "A mole whispers that for the second year running, suggestions that Andrew be invited to Kate's annual carol service, possibly seated behind a pillar, were rejected."
Prince Andrew has recently been accused of being linked to Chinese businessman Yang Tengbo, who was banned from the U.K. last week due to security concerns, per the BBC. Andrew was allegedly close to Yang and even promised to give him access to the royal family. In one letter to Yang, one of Prince Andrew's advisors wrote, "Under your guidance, we found a way to get the relevant people unnoticed in and out of the house in Windsor."
