Whooping cough cluster discovered at primary school
There are health fears in Sydney after a whooping cough cluster was uncovered at a school in the city’s eastern suburbs.
Parents have been told to be alert but not alarmed after a number of students at Bronte Public School fell ill with whooping cough.
At least three children have been diagnosed with the potentially deadly illness in an area where vaccination rates are considered to be dangerously low.
“It is important to vaccinate and keep the diseases under control. It is worrying that more and more people don’t think that it’s harmful or even death for children,” concerned mother Kat Nunnerley told 7 News.
News Corp reports that while the principal did notify parents, she failed to inform health authorities.
Parents however, do not seem too concerned that this process reportedly slipped through the cracks. They are just happy that they knew about the outbreak.
Whooping cough starts out like a cold but turns into a seriously painful cough.
Commonly referred to as the 100-day cough, health experts say that this is a timely reminder to make sure vaccinations are up to date.
