West Ham are unlikely to move to re-sign Dimitri Payet this month, despite reports in France.

French newspaper L’Equipe claim that the Hammers had an interest in signing the 32-year-old in an attempt to boost their survival chances.

Payet enjoyed cult status at West Ham but he left the club under acrimonious circumstances in 2017 when he went on strike to force through a £25million move to Marseille.

The midfielder cited family problems as the reason he wanted to return to France, but West Ham felt betrayed after rewarding him with an improved contract the year before.

West Ham owner David Sullivan was furious with the way Payet behaved and the chances of the club moving to re-sign him are slim.

Will West Ham spend in the transfer window?

Sullivan and co-owner David Gold face a major decision over whether to increase their efforts to back manager David Moyes in the transfer market after last night’s heavy defeat at Leicester left West Ham deep in relegation trouble. Only goal difference is keeping them out of the bottom three.

The Hammers have only signed goalkeeper Darren Randolph so far and their squad is in desperate need of a boost in the final week of the transfer window.

West Ham had not planned to do major business in January but they are facing up to a relegation battle and need reinforcements. Moyes has made a central midfielder his priority as he looks to add some steel to his squad. He could also do with some added firepower.

West Ham were second best in every department against Leicester last night and midfielder Robert Snodgrass has told his team-mates they must face a few home truths before they can think about climbing away from the relegation zone.

Things could get a lot worse before then for the Hammers, who face a tough run in the next month. They play Liverpool twice as well as Manchester City.
