We're Watching These Trends At TTEC Holdings (NASDAQ:TTEC)

If we want to find a stock that could multiply over the long term, what are the underlying trends we should look for? Typically, we'll want to notice a trend of growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and alongside that, an expanding base of capital employed. Put simply, these types of businesses are compounding machines, meaning they are continually reinvesting their earnings at ever-higher rates of return. Although, when we looked at TTEC Holdings (NASDAQ:TTEC), it didn't seem to tick all of these boxes.

Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What is it?

For those who don't know, ROCE is a measure of a company's yearly pre-tax profit (its return), relative to the capital employed in the business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for TTEC Holdings:

Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)

0.11 = US$162m ÷ (US$1.8b - US$345m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2020).

Therefore, TTEC Holdings has an ROCE of 11%. That's a relatively normal return on capital, and it's around the 10% generated by the IT industry.

How Are Returns Trending?

Unfortunately, the trend isn't great with ROCE falling from 16% five years ago, while capital employed has grown 115%. However, some of the increase in capital employed could be attributed to the recent capital raising that's been completed prior to their latest reporting period, so keep that in mind when looking at the ROCE decrease. It's unlikely that all of the funds raised have been put to work yet, so as a consequence TTEC Holdings might not have received a full period of earnings contribution from it.

In Conclusion...

While returns have fallen for TTEC Holdings in recent times, we're encouraged to see that sales are growing and that the business is reinvesting in its operations. And long term investors must be optimistic going forward because the stock has returned a huge 125% to shareholders in the last five years. So while the underlying trends could already be accounted for by investors, we still think this stock is worth looking into further.
