SINGAPORE — Here is a round-up of sports events and developments in Singapore in the past week (13-19 September):

Albirex fend off Sailors to gain control for SPL title win

Albirex Niigata Singapore took a giant step towards retaining their Singapore Premier League (SPL) title, when they drew 1-1 with second-placed Lion City Sailors at Jalan Besar Stadium on Friday (17 September).

A dramatic 94th-minute equaliser from Ryoya Taniguchi cancelled out Haiqal Pashia Anugrah's 23rd-minute opener and ensured that Albirex stayed five points ahead of the Sailors with two matches left to play.

On Saturday, Tampines Rovers kept alive their slim hopes of finishing third with a 2-1 win over the Young Lions at Our Tampines Hub. Zehrudin Mehmedovic (34th minute) and Taufik Suparno (73rd) scored for the Stags, while Jacob Mahler (71st) replied for the Young Lions.

Hougang United inched closer to ensuring they will finish no lower than third spot, after a 1-1 draw against Tanjong Pagar United at Jurong East Stadium on Saturday. They took the lead in the ninth minute through Brazilian forward Gilberto Fortunato, but Tanjong Pagar equalised in the 53rd minute through Khairul Amri.

The match between Geylang International and Balestier Khalsa, originally schedule for Sunday, will be rescheduled to 29 September after a Geylang player tested positive for COVID-19, and the entire team was required to self-isolate with training suspended.

Aloysius Yapp lets lead slip to finish 2nd at US Open Pool C'ship

Singapore pool player Aloysius Yapp missed out on a golden opportunity to be crowned US Open champion, when he let slip an 8-3 lead to lost 8-13 to the Philippines' Carlo Biado in the final of the prestigious tournament at Harrah's Resort in Atlantic City on Saturday (18 September).

Biado, the 2017 World 9-Ball champion, became only the second Filipino to win the prestigious US Open title, after Efren Reyes in 1994.

Yapp, 25, had entered the final by beating the world's top two players - record five-time US Open champion and top-ranked Shane van Boening of the United States in the last 16, and world No. 2 Joshua Filler of Germany in the third round.

Despite the final loss, he still ended up with US$25,000 (S$34,000) in prize money, while Biado pocketed US$50,000.

National Stadium to support World Alzheimer's Day

The dome of the National Stadium will be illuminated in purple and yellow on Tuesday (21 September) to mark World Alzheimer's Day.

The public are encouraged to share their snaps of the lighted-up National Stadium dome with Dementia Singapore on social media, by tagging the Facebook and Instagram pages of Dementia Singapore and Singapore Sports Hub (@DementiaSingapore and @sgsportshub), and using the hashtags #ShineForDementia and #MySgSportsHub.

The National Stadium light-up is part of Dementia Singapore’s advocacy efforts to raise awareness for the condition and the people impacted by it – people living with dementia, caregivers and family members, healthcare professionals, and community care workers – during the month of September, which is globally commemorated as World Alzheimer’s Month.
