Incredible moment baby bat falls prey to ravenous lizard

Video has emerged of the “very unusual” moment a water dragon devours a bat on a Queensland golf course.

Mani Walsh was mowing the greens at Woodford Golf Club, south of Brisbane when he came across a water dragon eating a bat.

“I was coming up to the 13th green and noticed the lizard run out from under a slab and straight up to a bat that had been eating fruit on the ground and grabbed it,” Mr Walsh told Yahoo News Australia.

“I drove up as slowly as I could, and got as close as he’d let me before he started to take too much notice.

“I was worried he’d spit it and run away, so I stopped got my phone out and started recording.”

Mr Walsh said the bat was still alive before he began filming and it took 10 minutes for the lizard to completely chew it up and swallow it whole.

“I was pretty beside myself,” he said.

He filmed the incident two years ago but only shared it to the Facebook page Nature 4 You on Wednesday.

Herpetologist Scott Eipper said he believes the bat was a juvenile and the water dragon was an adult female. Herpetology is the study of amphibians and reptiles.

“It’s not a common thing to see,” Mr Eipper said.

“It’s very unusual as water dragons are normally omnivores. I certainly haven’t heard of it.

“The bat appears to be a juvenile. Juvenile fruit bats normally hang on to a mother’s back but can become dislodged.”
