Watch: White House holds briefing in wake of second Trump assassination attempt
White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre held a press briefing Tuesday as the Biden administration continued to confront the security implications raised by a second apparent assassination attempt against former President Trump over the weekend.
President Biden and Trump spoke by phone Monday in a conversation the White House described as “cordial” following the event at the former president’s golf club in West Palm Beach, Fla, on Sunday. The briefing also comes after the suspect, Ryan Wesley Routh, was arrested and charged with federal gun crimes — though he did not fire at Trump before fleeing the scene.
Biden implied in comments to the media that Secret Service protection for candidates may need to be increased.
Senate majority leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) has also suggested that funding to step up candidate security could be folded into a continuing resolution that House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) is urging lawmakers to pass ahead of the Sept. 30 deadline.
