WATCH: Shocking moment drunk woman drives on the wrong side of the highway

Police have released terrifying footage of the moment a woman drives into oncoming traffic while drink-driving more than four times over the limit.

The video, released as part of Queensland Road Safety Week, shows the woman driving at speeds of up to 80km/h on the wrong side of the Gateway Motorway.

“Over 40% of fatalities in 2019 involved a drink or drug affected driver, this one could have ended in disaster,” Queensland Police captioned the video on Facebook.

The footage was captured in January this year and shows the 47-year-old Brisbane woman turning on to the Wynnum off ramp and on to the Gateway Motorway, driving the wrong way in a southbound lane.

In the video, other motorists are seen swerving out of the way as the woman drives her green hatchback in between lanes.

“Thanks to the evasive action taken by other drivers, a serious or fatal collision was avoided,” Queensland Police said on Facebook.

Officers said she was driving up to 80km/h and was driving along the motorway for two kilometres, heading north.

The woman had a blood alcohol reading of 0.214 per cent when she was pulled over.

She was charged with driving under the influence and not having proper control of the vehicle.
