Warning over hidden danger lurking in this photo

There is a hidden danger hiding in this photo – but can you spot it?

The Department of Transport and Main Roads Queensland shared the below photo of a body of water on Facebook posing the question: “Could you spot it before it's too late?”

The question puzzled quite a few followers on the social media platform.

“Looks like a crocodile,” one man wrote.

Another asked if it was a whale hiding under the surface.

Some replied to the post saying they couldn’t see anything untoward.

It turns out, it’s actually a sunken ship lurking just beneath the surface of the water.

“When we're deciding which derelict vessels need to be removed from the water, Maritime Safety Queensland first determines the risk to navigation and the environment,” the department explained.

“We work with owners to fulfil their obligations, but there are times when direct action needs to be taken.”

The department said the work is part of its “war on wrecks”.

“The vessels we remove are likely to break up in bad weather and create problems in our waterways. Because they're hazardous, we can't leave them in the water without risking the environment or the safety of waterway users,” the department said.

In May, the department was forced to take swift action to remove a sinking houseboat from the Noosa River. It’s not known what caused it to sink though it’s believed the owner was not present due to the coronavirus restrictions at the time.
