Warning as bizarre explosive items wash up on beach
Several explosive devices have washed up on a beach in the US state of Oregon, prompting a dire warning from authorities.
On October 4, officers from the Newport Police Department responded to reports of explosives found between Yaquina Bay State Park and Agate Beach, which is about a 6km stretch.
Newport is roughly 200km from Portland — Oregon's largest city.
Police found three separate devices and said it appeared as though they had washed ashore.
The explosives were then seized by the Oregon State Police Bomb Squad.
"WARNING: EXPLOSIVE," a label on one of the devices says. The warning indicates it is a simulator hand grenade and includes firing instructions.
Police are urging people not to touch such devices if they happen to find one on a beach, or anywhere else.
"If you encounter such a device, please do not handle or attempt to move it. Call 911 to report the device’s location," the Newport Police Department pleaded with the public on Facebook.
Simulator grenade used for training
HFI Pyrotechnics make Simulator, Hand Grenade M116A1, which could be the exact explosive that was found on the beach, however, this cannot be confirmed.
"The Simulator, Hand Grenade is designed for training exercises to acclimatise troops to the sights and sounds of battle in a non-lethal format," the company said online.
"This device, once the pull-wire is activated, after 6 – 12 seconds produces a loud report or simulated explosion of a grenade."

It appears there have been no further updates regarding the explosive devices found in Oregon.
On Facebook, police said they could not confirm where the devices came from.
