Warning as Aussie teen dies in chroming incident over Easter weekend

Esra Haynes, 13, suffered cardiac arrest after inhaling dangerous chemicals from an aerosol canister.

The devastated parents of a 13-year-old girl who died from a chroming incident on the weekend have vowed to raise awareness about the harmful trend that poses serious danger to teenagers still partaking in it.

Esra Haynes, a Year 8 student and athlete from Melbourne, reportedly suffered cardiac arrest after inhaling dangerous chemicals from an aerosol canister and died on Saturday.

There have been several reported deaths associated with chroming in Australia in recent years, including that of a 16-year-old NSW girl who was found dead in her bedroom, with a deodorant spray can and a tea towel underneath her. The ongoing issue has resulted in supermarkets including Coles and Woolworths locking away aerosol deodorants to prohibit young children from buying them.

Heartbroken parents' plea: 'This will be our crusade'

In the wake of their daughter's death, parents Paul and Andrea Haynes said they will make it their "life's mission" to raise awareness about the dangers of chroming.

"We want to help other children not fall into the silly trap of doing this silly thing. It’s unquestionable that this will be our crusade," Mr Haynes told the Herald Sun. "No matter how much you lead a horse to water, anyone can drag them away. It’s not something she would have done on her own."

The 13-year-old, who attended Lilydale High School on the outskirts of north-east Melbourne, was a "kind" and "generous" girl who was "taken too soon" her parents said. "She was the most inspiring soul that anyone could have met. She didn’t get to live the way we hoped for but she did all the lovely childhood things," Mr Haynes said.

Esra's three siblings, Imogen, Seth and Charlie, are "broken" and "devastated" by the death of their youngest sibling," their dad revealed. "She had her whole life ahead of her, she was the youngest but we gave her everything," he said.

Heartbreaking tributes for 'cheeky and talented' teen

The 13-year-old student has been remembered by her friends, school and sporting community for her "contagious laugh and gorgeous smile". The teen's best friend said her "heart aches" knowing she's gone.

"The one girl who could put a smile on anyone’s face no matter what. There wasn’t one day in the past 3 years you’ve not made my day by your contagious laugh and gorgeous smile" she wrote in a tribute on Facebook.

"My heart aches and it doesn’t feel real knowing I’ll have to say goodbye to you Esra. [You're] so young. You [were] gone [too] soon."

"I'll stay trying to make you proud and continue doing the things that made you happy," she continued. "Endlessly love and miss you esra. Rest In Paradise my love"

The teen was involved in a wide range of sports including aerobics, BMX bike riding and netball. In a post on Facebook, Montrose Football and Netball Club, where she was co-captain of her team, said she was "determined, fun, cheeky and talented" and will be "greatly missed by her teammates, coaches, and the wider community of our Club."

The Department of Education also extended its condolences to her family and friends and is reportedly offering support for students and staff.
