War veteran graduates from high school at 93

It’s never too late to teach an old dog new tricks, and war veteran Sam Stansell is living proof.

The 93-year-old from Tennessee in the US dropped out of Red Bank High School in 1942 when he was in his senior year to serve during World War Two.

Mr Stansell joined the navy, working in the engine room of the USS Saratoga, news outlet ABC7 reports.

At the time he was just 17-years-old.

He spent the next three years stationed on the USS Saratoga in the South Pacific and played his part in the famous battle of Iwo Jima, the story of which was later told in a Hollywood film.

After the war, he married, before being called back into service during the Korean War, News Channel 9 reports.

He and his wife were married for an incredible 72 years.

When she died several years ago, Mr Stansell decided to go back to school and complete the education his war service had denied him.

He graduated from his old school, Red Bank High School, on November 12 – 76 years after he had first left to go to war.
