Popular waterfall closed after swimmer bitten by crocodile

A popular swimming spot has been temporarily closed to the public after a swimmer was bitten by a crocodile.

Northern Territory Parks and Wildlife announced on Sunday the closure on their Facebook page.

“Unfortunately a cranky freshwater crocodile has nipped someone at Wangi Falls this afternoon,” the post said.

“As a precaution the lower pool will be closed for swimming until it is removed.

“The upper poll, Cascades and nearby Florence Falls and Buley Rockhole are still open for swimming.”

Wangi Falls, located in the Litchfield National Park, is known to have crocodiles during the dry season (May to October), according to a Northern Territory government site.

Official advice from the Northern Territory government is to only swim in areas with the designated safe swimming signs and if there is no swimming sign, do not swim in the area.

A 2017 report by National Critical Care and Trauma Response Centre, Royal Darwin Hospital and the Menzies School of Health Research found 14 people died from crocodile attacks between 2005 and 2014.

Earlier this year a NSW woman was branded an “idiot” for sitting on Cahills Crossing in Kakadu National Park, a place known for its crocodile population.
