People in Shropshire and Worcestershire have captured some picturesque photographs showing hills rising above the recent dense mist and fog in a rare weather phenomenon.

Those enjoying a post-Christmas walk on the Malvern Hills, Worcestershire and in Church Stretton, Shropshire, on Friday and Saturday shared their images of the cloud inversions.

Otherwise known as temperature inversions, they happen when temperatures near the ground are lower than temperatures higher in the air, which is opposite to what normally occurs.

The low cloud, mist and fog was trapped in place by a slow-moving area of high pressure.

The weather system continued to cause disruption at several UK airports on Saturday with dozens of flights at Heathrow and Gatwick cancelled or delayed.
