Strangers save baby, little girl from wrecked car moments before explosion

Strangers have saved a baby and a little girl from a car wreck just moments before it erupted into a fireball in Perth’s south.

It took just seconds for the car to burst into flames after it came off Thomas Road, Orelia on Friday morning and hit a tree.

Witnesses said it looked like the male driver was trying to avoid something on the road. Two little girls were in the back seat of the car.

Ian Urquhart said he and a number of witnesses tried to move a tree branch out of the way so they could get to the windscreen and break it.

“But we just couldn’t do it so we dragged them out through the back,” he said.

“The engine bay was on fire, so one of the other fellas that pulled up, so he put that out, he came back ten seconds later and the car just caught on fire.”

One witness said the car turned into a “big ball of fire”. Pictures of the burnt-out vehicle following the blaze show how lucky the man and the two children were to survive.

They are currently in hospital in a stable condition.
