Three young children pricked by used needles while playing
Three children had to be taken to hospital after they pricked themselves with used syringes in Perth's north.
The boys were playing metres from their home in Ridgewood when they found the needles on a vacant block.
When Daniel Lekis and his wife were told their two boys had punctured themselves with used syringes, they panicked.
"It's not something I really want something my kids to go through... or anyone's children," Mr Lekis told 7 News.
Two syringes were found by the six and seven-year-old near a footpath at a vacant block behind their house, on Corinda Way, just before dinner time yesterday.
Their five-year-old friend also pricked himself.
Luckily neighbour and mum-of-three Jodie Timms overheard the boys talking about what happened.
She immediately told their parents, who rushed them to Joondalup Health Campus.
"I went over there and said, you know, what are you guys talking about, and they got a bit sheepish. One of the boys pulled out a syringe from his pocket," Ms Timms said.
"I'm grateful that she was there and actually did pick up on it," Mr Lekis said.
Both sets of parents are in for a nervous wait.
Their children need to be tested for Hepatitis B and C and HIV, but they can't be tested for at least another six weeks. They then need to be tested again six weeks after that.
Doctors say the puncture wounds are shallow and the boys should be okay.
The children won't be allowed to play in the area again.
