Rescue operation to save boy, 7, trapped underground near Perth

A delicate rescue mission has been underway in Perth's north where a young boy is trapped underground.

The 7-year-old has been stuck in a trench since approximately 4pm Sunday that emergency crews fear is collapsing around him.

Specialised rescue equipment was rushed to the Jandabup property where there has been frantically digging by firefighters.

A rescue helicopter was flown to the scene and paramedics are there too where the boy is trapped two metres down a trench with the ground around him unstable.

There is concern for the boy clear on the faces of family and neighbours who were first on the scene.

The delicate rescue operation requires highly trained officers from Urban Search and Rescue and vertical rescue units.

Wooden boards have been moved in to shore up the sides of the trench to avoid a cave-in.

“At this stage, the young chap is comfortable,” said Gerry Wirger, a fire officer with the First District.

“We've mobilised further specialised equipment to shore up the trench before we proceed in digging further down we have ambulance paramedics monitoring the child.”

It’s a difficult rescue operation and emergency workers expect to be there for some time into the evening.
