Mystery over fate of married couple after husband found dead in ‘most remote area on the planet’

It's the outback mystery that has police baffled two years on: a husband found dead down a mine shaft, his wife missing.

Now the WA Government is offering a reward of quarter of a million dollars to find out what happened to Raymond and Jenny Kehlet.

When police and volunteers started their search for the husband and wife prospectors they encountered problems from the very beginning.

"It's about the most remote area you can find on the planet," new Police Commissioner Chris Dawson said.

Sandstone is 730 kilometres by road north-east of Perth.

The place 47-year-old Raymond and 49-year-old Jenny went prospecting was 30 kilometres from there - vast and difficult country peppered with thousands of derelict mine shafts.

In March 2015 their dog Ella wandered alone into the Sandstone caravan park.

Family raised the alarm, but clues were scarce.

Raymond's body was found down a disused mine mineshaft two kilometres from his camp, while Jenny has never been found.

"We want to leave no stone unturned when it comes to solving this outback mystery," police minister Michelle Roberts said.

For their own reasons, police are reluctant to label the death of Raymond Kehlet as a murder.

"The death of Ray is being regarded as a suspicious death and homicide squad are involved," Commissioner Dawson said.

"You can join those dots together."

Commissioner Dawson believes someone must know something.

The discovery of Raymond's body and the uncertainty about Jenny Kehlet has been distressing for family members.

"The last two years have seen our family caught in an agonising and exhausting limbo desperate for answers and for closure," the family said in a statement.
