WATCH: Teen's terrifying close encounter with a huge shark
A Mandurah, WA teen's terrifying close encounter with a shark at a popular surf spot has been caught on camera.
Luckily, Matt Marshall escaped unscathed and says it won't keep him out of the water.
"Just saw a splash, thought it was a dolphin at first then yeah went back through the footage and realised it was a shark," Mr Marshall said.
He was in the water near Prevelley last Sunday, when he came within a metre of a shark.
"You just see the fin pull off the wave, about a metre in front of me ... so lucky it didn't come towards me a bit quicker."
As his mate Cobie Evans watched and filmed from the beach the predator came chillingly close to his friend.
"It was almost like it was going for him," Mr Evans said.
"He's lucky he went for the wave essentially because he could have been missing a leg for all we knew."
He believes it was around four metres long but can't be sure.
Mr Marshall went out again after and caught another wave, undisturbed.
By coincidence his close encounter happened on the same day as another encounter nearby at Gracetown.
There, a great white shark launched itself out of the water and knocked a young woman off her surfboard.
It's sharp teeth gouged three marks in her board.
Despite that incident and their own experience the Mandurah mates aren't scared.
"Everyone's so scared of sharks, but the whole reason you're out in the water you just can't be scared otherwise you wouldn't be in the water in the first place," Mr Evans said.
