Two injured in dramatic day at Roe 8 protest site

Forty-one protesters have been arrested in a dramatic day at the controversial Perth Freight Link site.

Protesters broke through a fence at the Roe 8 site on Thursday in a bid to disrupt the clearing of the unique Beeliar Wetlands, with police forced to quickly move in.

During the commotion, two people were injured including Billy Amesz who was kicked in the face by a police horse.

"As he hit me, he said 'move', but there was no time to move," Mr Amesz said.

The clearing work is part of the $1.9 billion Perth Freight Link that aims to provide a better road between industrial areas and Fremantle Port.

"The senseless destruction continues to occur in Beeliar Regional Park, despite many non-compliance issues that the government have been made aware of including asbestos throughout the area," Rethink the Link spokeswoman Kim Dravnieks said.

"The Barnett government continues to underestimate the power of community to stand in unity against this appalling project on the eve of an election."

But Transport Minister Bill Marmion has accused the activists of putting officers' lives at risk and wasting resources.

Three people still remain up trees in the construction zone while others on the ground were given protective masks to wear after asbestos was detected in two locations.
