WA footballer banned for racial slur

A former Fremantle Docker has been slapped with a ban for directing a racial slur at an opponent during a game.

Subiaco’s Josh Deluca, 21, who was de-listed after playing four games for AFL club Fremantle last season, will appeal a ban after he called Claremont’s Keifer Yu an “Asian ****” during a WAFL match.

On Tuesday night, the WAFL Tribunal found Deluca guilty of breaching the competition’s Racial & Religious Inappropriate Conduct Policy.

He was suspended for three matches.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the WAFL said: “This is no place for this kind of behaviour and it won’t be tolerated at the football”.

“We must ensure we offer safe, welcoming and inclusive environments for everyone involved in our game,” the statement read.

But the Subiaco Football Club said it was “extremely disappointed” with the decision, adding that the outcome is “unjust” and it just “serves to damage our player’s reputation”.

The club added Yu refused to accept conciliation and instead opted to bring the matter before the tribunal.

Deluca was apologetic at the tribunal and will return to appeal his case next week.
