Virgin plane's engines 'flame out' mid-air moments before landing

Two engines flamed out on a Virgin flight from Sydney moments before landing.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau is investigating after the major failure on the twin-engine turboprop aircraft during the flight from Sydney to Canberra last Thursday.

The plane was carrying 78 passengers as well as crew when the right engine flamed out at 11,000 feet as it began its descent to Canberra.

It reignited five seconds later but then the left engine flamed out, forcing crew to perform manual ignition for the remainder of the flight.

The plane landed safety and nobody was injured. The plane stayed at Canberra for three days for testing before it recommenced flights on Monday.

It has made almost a dozen trips since the incident.

Virgin Australia told 7 News the flight landed safely and no customers were impacted.

The airline said it was cooperating with safety investigators who would make a report public should they have any findings that show passengers were at risk.
